There are several different types of active ingredients found in over-the-counter acne treatments, each suiting a particular type of skin and acne severity. Some, like benzoyl peroxide, actually remove excess oil and kill excess bacteria; others, like salicylic acid or alpha hydroxy acid, slough away excess dead skin, which can lead to oil build-up and blemishes. There are also natural active ingredients, like tea tree oil, which absorbs excess oil without the intense drying effects of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Finally, there are a number of FDA-approved homeopathic ingredients that fight oil and bacteria naturally.

Given research on a number of different acne treatment review pages, and through analysis of user forums and feedback, it appears that fighting acne is most effective when approached with a multi-step treatment system – for those with moderate to severe acne, applying one cream or using one face wash often isn't enough to get the job done!

This report will be focused around the three best multi-step acne fighting treatments we could find on the Web.
I used Google to research what would be the best multi-step acne fighting treatments. I started by simply culling names of several different treatments, but then I honed in, looking at various review sites, expert sites, user forums and in site feedback sections. I noticed a few names kept appearing repeatedly but then I realized these were likely affiliate marketing sites, designed to get sales commissions. I ruled out Exposed and ClearPores (two products with large numbers of affiliate sites) because I found several user forums criticizing these products, calling them a scam, overpriced or simply ineffective. I then changed direction, and started to look for treatments that had high rankings on Acne.org, a popular user forum for discussing various acne products. Because there were several products with favorable rankings, I focused on three of the most highly recommended products, then spent more time researching each on various forums and review sites to ensure that these products were worth recommending on 3 Best.

In deciding what are the best treatment systems for acne and  the overall health of a person’s skin, I focused on the following criteria:
  1. Trustworthiness - Does the product contain a proven active ingredient such as Benzoyl Peroxide?
  2. Usability – How manageable is the product?
  3. Pricing – Does the overall product deliver effective acne treatment and skin rejuvenation at an affordable price?
  4. Performance - Does the Product Get the Desired Results?
While there were some other tangible factors in the selection process, and included in the discussion below, these four attributes illustrate the most important factors in the decision making process.

ProActiv 3-Step Treatment System

Widely recommended as one of the most effective OTC acne treatment methods on the market, ProActiv is a three-step treatment system that incorporates both glycolic acid (to slough dead skin cells) and natural plant extracts (such as aloe juice) to aid its 2.5% concentration of benzoyl peroxide. Meant to be used twice daily (morning and night), the system begins with its 'Renewing Cleanser', which you apply with your fingertips. After massaging the face with the cleanser for 1-2 minutes, you thoroughly rinse, and apply the 'Revitalizing Toner' with a cotton ball or pad. You must allow the toner to dry, and then apply the third and final 'Repairing Treatment', which you also must leave on and allow to dry. The 2.5% concentration of benzoyl peroxide means less drying of the skin, which may be ideal for those who have more sensitive skin. The entire ProActiv system costs $19.95, and for an extra $10 you can purchase the whole system along with a moisturizer and oil-control cream. ProActiv has celebrity endorsements that may indicate its commitment to delivering a quality product, and the system is highly regarded on nearly every BP review site. I would rank this product the highest of the three, simply because there is the most amount of positive documentation on this product, both from expert reviews and on community forums.

Nature's Cure (Male and Female Formulas)

For the second best product I selected Nature's Cure for its unique treatment method, combining both homeopathic pills and a benzoyl peroxide spot cream to fight acne inside and out. Taken twice daily, at morning and night, the pills also have a specific advantage of being specifically tailored for the hormonal balances of men and women, and therefore have a more targeted, effective method for fighting acne. The spot cream's benzoyl peroxide aids in fighting acne topically while the pills work to reduce skin sensitivity and the overall amount of oil produced by the skin. At $9 and available both online and in drugstores, Nature's Cure is a more natural and perhaps more thorough multi-step approach, fighting acne internally and externally. Finally, it is widely recommended on expert sites and on user forums, many claiming rapid results without the harsh effects of other products.

AcneFree Clear Skin System

Similar to ProActiv, AcneFree Clear Skin System is a three-step acne treatment and a comparably effective multi-step treatment. Again, this product makes the 3 Best because of a high number of positive reviews, and because it provides a very similar (and less expensive) alternative to ProActiv. AcneFree would be a suitable multi-step alternative perhaps for those who have not found ProActiv to be effective for their specific type of skin. AcneFree starts with a cleanser that contains benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteriaes and remove surface oil and dirt. The 2nd step, a toner, contains plant extracts like aloe juice and chamomile extract to soothe the skin and even skin tone. The final step, a lotion, contains a special kind of 'microencapsulated' benzoyl peroxide, designed to be slowly released throughout the day or night, keeping constant guard for oil and bacteria. While this product may at first seem similar to ProActiv, there are a few benefits that AcneFree has in particular – 1), you get twice the amount of product for the same price of $19.95 (10 oz. vs. 5 oz.), 2), you can purchase AcneFree at your local drugstore or retailer, as opposed to only online like ProActiv, and 3), the 'microencapsulated' benzoyl peroxide ensures bacteria and oil control 24/7. Again, this product also comes highly recommended on expert sites and in user forums.

While all three products were at the top of their class in skin treatment, ProActiv takes 1st place for its well documented effectiveness and widespread popularity. 2nd in my ranking goes to Nature's Cure for its gentle-yet-effective, all-inclusive approach (fighting acne from the inside and out), for its price value ($9.95, cheaper than both AcneFree and ProActiv), and for ease of use (pills taken morning and night, spot cream used as necessary). 3rd in my ranking goes to the AcneFree Clear Skin System – a close alternative to ProActiv which is appealing for both its price and special slow-release benzoyl peroxide formula. And finally, while these are our findings for the 3 Best multi-step treatments, no one treatment is right for every person – the overall effectiveness of these products largely depends on your type of skin and acne severity.
